Learning Objectives
:: InvestigationThe learner:
• Must be able to recognise the process of metamorphosis in examples of surrealist art and produce a visual response that shows evidence of their understanding
• Should be able to use and explain the approaches employed by surrealist artists when creating the process of transformation
• Could be able to select images to use when creating their visual response that when combined together suggest meanings that are imaginative and surreal
:: Experimentation
The learner:
• Must be able to visually describe the deconstruction of their previous work in order to produce a series of at least four comic strip frames that visualise how they have applied the process of metamorphosis
• Should be able to recognise the importance of a comic strip and create a comic strip layout that adds interest and dynamic to the four frames of their comic strip
• Could be able to define the process of metamorphosis they are creating in their comic strip by adding a narrative to each of the four frames in their comic strip
:: Realisation
The learner:
• Must be able to explain how they have used the process of metamorphosis to create their comic strip
• Should be able to show clear reference to the work of surrealists artists in their own work
• Could be able to combine what they have learnt from their research with their own ideas to create an outcome that is a fully realised personal response
Method and Learning Outcome
In this activity, I want to use ‘Upwardly Mobile Learning’ from Peter Ginnis (2000) as a method to make the learning objectives explicit for learners so they are able to see the ‘big picture’ in an effective way. “Upwardly Mobile Learning” can motivate learners and stimulate higher achievement and can also address the learners’ previous knowledge, experience and performance.For example, learners will be encouraged to use visual resources from the toolkit folder provided. These resources include such things as samples of students’ work, the work of established surrealist artists, popular online game characters, comic strips/graphic novels and symbols from Salvador Dali’s work.
:: Investigation
Learners:
• Must investigate some examples of surrealist art by discussing the choice of images used and the methods used to convey concepts
• Produce a self-initiated response to the examples of surrealist art discussed
• Use their understanding of how metamorphosis has been applied by artists to create surreal imagery, when creating their own transformation drawing
• Should quickly draft out their initial ideas for their transformation drawing before deciding on what their find response should be
• Adopt a variety of approaches to the drawing task (e.g. continuous line drawing, breathing drawing, hold the pencil at the end whilst drawing)
• Could draw things from memory or direct observation to include in their transformation drawings
• Annotate their drawing with notes explaining the concept behind their transformation drawing
:: Experimentation
Learners:
• Must produce four drawings in response to their transformation drawing, which need to show a sequence of transformation in four stages, from the start to the end of the transformation
• Try to create a sequence of four drawings each of which incorporates its own distinctive choice of surface (e.g. working on a charcoal ground, working on a textured surface, working on a patterned background)
• Design a layout for their sequence of four transformation drawings
• Should make some quickly drawn alternative layout designs showing different ideas that emphasis at least one of the four sequences, before deciding on their final layout
• Annotate their sequence of four transformation drawings with notes that help the viewer understand the process of transformation
• Could try to add a narrative to their sequence of four transformation drawings by combining text boxes with each of their four drawings
:: Realisation
Learners:
• Must create a comic strip sequence that consists of four process-driven drawings using a comic strip layout on an alternative drawing surface
• Should draw out some ideas for another four drawing transformation comic strip immediately after they have finished the final piece
• Could make a second improved version of their four drawing transformation comic strip
